The University of St. Thomas and INSPIRE Texas by Region 4 are excited to announce a new collaboration for teachers in Texas who are looking to continue their education and certifications. Through a recent partnership, St. Thomas and Region 4 will offer a Master of Education in Educational Leadership and a Master of Education in Counselor Education with a specialization in School Counseling.

The Educational Leadership program is a 30-hour master’s program resulting in the Principal as Instructional Leader (PIL) certificate through INSPIRE Texas. Candidates will engage in leadership activities aligned to the Texas PIL Standards in a year-long internship; complete practical, job-related coursework; and be supported in passing the state exams. In the coursework, candidates develop a shared understanding of the nature and meaning of school culture, implement effective data analysis, and conduct data analysis meetings, as well as classroom observations and feedback to inform decisions about their specific campus needs.

St. Thomas’ Master of Education in Counselor Education is a highly regarded 48-hour program that focuses on counseling strategies, school-side program development and mental health. The Counselor Education degree prepares professional school counselors and is based on a Freirian model of education where everyone has equal responsibility for the success of each class and the program. The program fosters networking and cooperation as opposed to competition and, since this is a professional degree, it balances academic rigor with ample practice. The classes require a great deal of reading and are conducted as seminars. Students come to the table ready to integrate their life experiences with their reading in a learning community. The program has an emphasis on diversity, culture, language and issues of privilege and oppression.

The University of St. Thomas, located in Houston’s Museum District, is a high-quality and innovative Catholic university founded in 1947. UST is listed among the country’s best colleges in Forbes and U.S. News and World Reports and was a West South Central Region Top Pick for Teacher Prep Bachelor Degrees.
